When you see a turtle, you may think they are shy because they sometimes hide in their shells. Their upper shell is called a carapace and it is hard to break through.
Turtles have walked on the earth for a long time. Science tells us that these cold-blooded reptiles have existed around 215 million years. Turtles can also live up to 200 years.
Most turtles lay eggs under sand, and they usually leave the eggs to hatch alone. The turtles then make their way to the top and scramble to the water.
Turtles can be huge and have special abilities. For example, the leatherback sea turtle can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. The sea turtle’s glands help them take out the salt from the water that they drink.
Sadly, many turtle species are endangered. This is because they are hunted to extinction. It is our duty to protect these precious and beloved creatures from disappearing.
