Tree Frogs Protect Themselves with Camouflage and Color

People come in different colors and different shapes. But frogs are even more diverse than people.

Tree frogs are green with orange toes. The green helps them to blend in with their environment. Tree frogs keep their eyes closed when they are resting, but open their red eyes suddenly when they are startled. This, in turn, startles predators and gives them time to escape from the predator.

In contrast, the poisonous dart frog from South America has brightly colored skin. These colors warn other animals that they are poisonous. Native people hunt small animals with the poison that comes from the frog’s skin.

Without frogs, the world would be a dull place.
