Where in Dane County: Works Projects Bridge

by Alex Lee, age 13

Just south of Verona, where county highway PB meets state highway 69, lies the adorable little town of Paoli. Over the years Free Press reporters have visited Paoli several times to get ice cream, snack on delicious cheese, and study local history.

About a mile east of this small Dane County hamlet is a bridge that was built in 1936 by workers of the WPA. It is one of several local examples of structures initiated and completed during the Great Depression by the Works Progress Administration.

This bridge still stands solid today. To see it just drive south from Verona for about ten minutes on county truck PB. There is a plaque built right into the bridge that commemorates the workers who built the impressive structure.
