Insects Construct Complex Colonies

Insect colonies are much more intricate than you might think. Many insect species work together to build their colonies.

One example of this is the Paper wasp. These insects build nests made of chewed fiber, otherwise known as paper. These nests are beautiful and complex. Termites can also build paper nests, which can be up to 20 feet high.

Termites work according to a sort of caste system. The insects are divided into different groups called castes. Each group has its own role to help the colony. For example, brown termites, with large heads and jaws, become soldiers to protect the colony. Other termites, that are smaller and paler, fix nest damage.

Ants pull leaves together to make their colonies. However, one ant working alone would not be able to pull a leaf. That is why ants work together to complete the task.

While insects may be very different and much smaller than humans, they still do similar things. Both insects and humans work together with their counterparts to make their homes places where their species will thrive.
