After two decades of planning, construction on a $12 million pedestrian bridge begins this winter. When finished in mid-2026, it will allow thousands of hikers, cyclists, and snowshoers to cross the Wisconsin River to Sauk County and the Devil’s Lake area.
The Wisconsin River has crossings for cars, but few are safe for pedestrians. As one snowmobiler put it, “You go as far south as Spring Green and as far north as Wisconsin Dells to cross the river.”
The proposed bridge would connect Dane County to existing paths and trails in Sauk County, and eventually lead to Devil’s Lake.
This 500-foot bridge is an expensive endeavor. Grants and federal funds will cover $11 million in costs. The other $1 million will be paid for by Dane and Sauk counties. Although costly, it is expected to generate $6 million per year in revenue. A 2021 UW Extension study shows the project will encourage tourism. The plan uses an existing railroad bridge to save on construction costs.
This bridge is one of many state projects planned to connect Wisconsin trails and parks. The project aims to improve domestic tourism, encourage outdoor recreation, and increase access to Wisconsin's parks.
