Australian Shepherds Became Beloved Ranch and Family Dogs

The Australian Shepherd is known for being a great ranch dog and a great family member. However, it's not actually an Australian breed.

The Australian Shepherd is a magnificent ranch dog because of its backstory. The breed originated in Europe, bred by the finest herders. These herders used them on farms for cattle ranching. This breed is outstanding, thanks to its high stamina and quickness, allowing it to chase cattle for hours.

The breed’s shepherding ability caught the eye of the American ranchers, who started importing them to the U.S. Here the dog's name originated. In California, ranchers loved the way the dog worked. Americans assumed it was an Australian breed, because Australians were known as excellent breeders.

The Australian Shepherd became an iconic part of western U.S. cowboy culture. The dog breed then became part of many homes. Families loved the breed because of its affection towards family members. Its tolerance and patience with children also made them stand out from other breeds.

The Australian Shepherd became a very popular option for therapy dogs, drug detectors, service dogs, and search-and-rescue dogs. Their quality attributes such as patience, kindness and intelligence made this breed stand out and ultimately one of the most popular dogs today.
