A baby white rhino was born in Belgium and named Nova, marking a significant moment for conservation efforts. She was first shown to the public in February 2024.
After her birth, the calf was cared for by the zoo staff. Although Nova was initially nervous, her mother’s presence made her feel at ease.
White rhinos are very large animals and eat about 120 pounds of grass per day. The southern white rhino lives in South Africa and can live up to 50 years. Even though they are called white rhinos, they are usually not white but tend to be gray or brown. They can survive up to five days without drinking water and five to seven days without food. White rhinos are the largest rhino species, growing 12 to 15 feet from head to tail. There are two types of white rhinos, including northern white rhinos and southern white rhinos.
Northern white rhinos are endangered and at risk of extinction. It is important that efforts continue to be made to protect these creatures and help their populations rebound.
