Learn All About the Sand Cat

Sand cats are small and well adapted cats that are widely found in the desert. This special kind of cat can go for days, even weeks, without water. Instead, they get the moisture from their prey. Sand cats are mainly nocturnal; although they are not typical cats, they rest in underground burrows and hunt during the night. Unfortunately, people will capture sand cats and keep them as pets.

Sand cats are a sandy gray color, and their heads are sandy brown with large yellow eyes. Their bodies are about 22 inches long, but their tails add about 14 inches. They can weigh between three and eight pounds.

Sand cats live in the deserts of Northern Africa and Central Asia, Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. They also live in sandy, rocky deserts with little water. They eat birds, small rodents, and snakes. Sand cats have very sensitive feet, which help them detect prey underground. They have long hair that covers their paws to protect them from the heat. Additionally, their sandy color fur allows them to camouflage with the desert environment and capture prey easily.

If you ever see a sand cat, don’t get too close to them because they might not be as friendly as it seems. Sand cats are remarkable desert creatures that are well-adapted to these harsh environments, their heightened sensitivity and physical appearance allow them to thrive.
