Giraffes Are Graceful Animals of the African Grasslands

Did you know that baby giraffes are known as calves? These calves are about six feet tall when they are born!

The scientific name for a giraffe is giraffe camelopardalis. These animals are herbivores which means their diet consists of plants, grass, leaves, and fruit. These mammals can weigh up to 1,750 to 2,800 pounds, and can grow up to 19 feet tall!

Calves commonly die due to lion attacks during the beginning of their lifespan. Adult giraffes can protect themselves due to their height. Along with their height, giraffes have long tongues, necks, and strong legs for running. For giraffes to stay safe, they need to be mindful of their surroundings when bending down to rest or drink water.

Giraffes take turns between resting drinking water and being on the lookout for predators. One giraffe is always checking for predators like lions and other surprise attacks or approaches. Scientists believe that other animals often congregate near giraffes for protection as giraffes have an advantage in seeing longer distances. Their features allow them to survive in the open grasslands across Africa.

Giraffes are remarkable animals that are known for their height. They have adapted to survive well in the African savannah, using their height as an advantage to reach leaves and stay observant of predators. Giraffes are important in maintaining the environment and biodiversity, they are an essential part of the animal kingdom.
