The Dane County Regional Airport plans to expand its flights internationally, specifically to Mexico and Canada. This will let area residents take long-distance trips directly from a convenient location.
The airport has been going strong in recent years, with around 2.35 million passengers in 2024 – its second-highest travel year on record. Adding an international designation to Madison’s airport adds convenience for customers. Community members would not have to drive to airports like Chicago’s O’Hare or Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport.
“We know that this is a region that people want to be in.” Melissa Agard, Dane County Executive stated. “We’re the fastest growing county in the state of Wisconsin and we need to make sure that we’re keeping up with the needs of not only our community but people who want to be spending time here.”
Agard and other local officials hope this international airport will grow Madison's economy and create more opportunities. An international airport destination could potentially strengthen Madison’s global reach which means if people start traveling more, it will bring more global investors and visitors. Improve customs and security efficiency so that Madison will have more restaurants and hotels and make Madison bigger. Boost economic growth and enhance trade and business.
Dane County’s plan to add international flights to its airport will not happen overnight even though the plan has support at the county level, it still needs to be approved by the federal government. It will likely take years for the plan to be completed.
