Driftless Historium Unveils New Mural in Mt. Horeb

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Mount Horeb Historical Society is unveiling a mural that reflects Mount Horeb and the surrounding Driftless Area.

The mural was painted in sections inside Sign Art Studios, a company and artist workshop just a few blocks from the museum. The project cost is around $25,000. A team of artists from this company are working on the painting. Shirley Martin, age 95, and her great-grandson Jaxson took part in the process of creating this mural.

The mural was designed by Dave Correll of Brushwork Signs. The Driftless Historium is based on the idea that, even if you’re new to the area or have been there before, you are bound by this land we live on.

The museum was created on the idea of someday filling the side of the Driftless Historium building with artwork. Now on May 10, 2025, the 30-by-15 foot-mural will be revealed.

This museum has many things to see and enjoy. Some of these things are a community room, a gallery, and an exhibit called “Life and Change at the Edge of the Driftless.” There is also a gift shop, and even an ice cream shop, which we enjoyed on our previous visit.

The Driftless Historium is an award-winning museum started by the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society. If you ask, it’s possible to arrange a tour with one of the museum’s staff. During our visit, we were able to see the museum and even toured behind-the-scenes areas that people usually don’t see.

This museum is a wonderful place to see and learn more about the history of Mount Horeb and Wisconsin. The mural honors their anniversary and expresses love for the Driftless Area and the beautiful natural landscapes of southwest Wisconsin.

Next time you are in the Mount Horeb Area, make sure to stop by the Driftless Historium. We made the trip last summer and plan to visit this wonderful museum again soon.
