The Powerful Black Mamba

by Armond V. Garcia-Harper, age 8

The black mamba is an incredible reptile. It is a large poisonous snake, in fact, the largest venomous snake in Africa.

The black mamba lives in eastern and southern Africa. It usually inhabits grassy savannahs, scrubs, and open woodlands. At night, this large snake tucks away in dark, secluded areas such as caves, rocky crevices and termite mounds. It is dark in color to help it blend in with its surroundings when hiding in crevices.

Black mambas are very fast. There average speed is about 7-12 mph making them the fastest snake in the world. Most people are afraid of black mambas, but they don’t attack people often. Actually, snakes are very shy and prefer to stay away from humans. But if the black mamba feels threatened, it will attack.

Even though they can be dangerous, black mambas are really cool reptiles.
