The Life of a Legend

by Vindia Robinson, age 10

Have you ever heard of singing legend Whitney Houston?

Even before Whitney was a well-known singer, her life revolved around music.

Her mother Cissy Houston was the minister of a church, where Whitney discovered her dream. When she was 15, she started performing with her mother and the church choir. Along the way, she signed with a modeling agency and was featured on the cover of Seventeen magazine. But music was still her number one love. Whitney got her big break at a night club, when she was signed by Clive Davis of Arista Records. She was only 19 years old.

Later on, Whitney happily married R&B singer Bobby Brown. But soon after, the marriage changed from lovely to brutal. Drugs and abusive behavior started to tear the couple apart. Brown started appearing in a reality TV show called “Being Bobby Brown.” Things worsened and everything was caught on tape. Whitney’s career was going downhill and she turned to drugs.

Whitney was a very successful singer. She made a lot of hit songs, and inspired a lot of people with her powerful voice. A favorite of mine that still lives on is “I Will Always Love You” from the soundtrack of the film The Bodyguard. That soundtrack won her three Grammy’s Awards. She also scored seven number one hits. Her first four albums sold over 86 million copies.

Whitney Houston died of on February 11, 2012. But her music still lives on!
