by Rafa Pacheco, age 10

Do you know where soccer came from? It originated in China.

The history of soccer began more than 2,200 years ago. The game was played in China with a bamboo canes for the goals and a ball made out of hair, leather and feathers. During this time, soccer was used as exercise for the military.

In ancient times soccer was not played in fields, but in the streets. It was considered a rough game because people shoved each other a lot and many players would get injured. In fact, in the early 1300s many kings tried to ban soccer from England.

In 1865 a set of 13 rules were established, and marked the birth of modern-day soccer. In 1930 the first world cup was played and it was won by France.
Even though soccer originated in China, it has become a popular sport all over the world.
