Cap Times Wins Press Club Awards

by Helen Zhang, age 15

The Capital Times recently won 10 awards from the Milwaukee Press Club annual for “Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism.”
Four Capital Times writers won two awards each.
Reporter Mike Ivey, who serves on the Simpson Street Free Press board, won gold in the best investigative story category. His prize-winning story detailed accusations that Scott Walker’s administration had a vendetta against a grassroots advocacy organization.  The article featured the executive director of Wisconsin Coalition of Aging Groups Nino Amato’s assertions that the organization’s federal funding was cut after opposing Walker’s position on Medicare and health care reform.
Ivey also earned bronze in the best business story category for a detailed report on Wisconsin’s efforts to create a stable economy during the 21st century.
We at the Simpson Street Free Press are extremely proud of the hard-hitting journalism of our mentor, Mike Ivey!
