Puebla: A Mexican City With a Long History

Many people celebrate Cinco de Mayo, but not many people know what the significance of the holiday really is.

In 1862, France wanted to take control of some parts of Mexico. War started, and France was sure they would win but they lost. The victory of the battle at Puebla is happily celebrated each year as the Cinco de Mayo holiday. However, shortly after the battle, France conquered Mexico and remained in power for the following five years.

In addition to its history of Cinco de Mayo, Puebla also has an interesting, ancient history. The Olmecs made Cholula into one of Mexico’s most energetic cities by 100 B.C. During that time, the Olmecs began to build the Great Pyramid of Cholula. The pyramid is 181 feet tall, and its base is over 1,300 feet on each side. It is one of the biggest pyramids in the world.

Cholula is considered to be the most important settlement of Puebla, and it has a history of settlements by different peoples such as the Tolte –Chichimec, the Nahuatl –speaking tribes and the Aztecs. Today, Puebla is still a thriving city with a mix of cultures and traditions.

Puebla is a city rich in traditions. People in Puebla enjoy Mole Poblano, a traditional dish. Mole Poblano is made with peppers, cinnamon, nuts, and chocolate and is eaten with chicken. Puebla is also home to the first public library in the Americas. The Biblioteca Palafoxiana is the only remaining library from the Spanish colonial era.

The historic city of Puebla is fascinating to learn about. The famous battle of Puebla will be remembered forever as people around the world celebrate Pueblas victory and history on Cinco de Mayo.
